Chapter 21

After dinner, the two took a short walk to the cabana. Surrounded by two stone waterfalls on each side, the area looked like the place where a person would go for a poolside massage at a five-star resort – not Heshan’s backyard.

“Have a seat. I’ll be right back with dessert,” Heshan said.

“Okay.”

While Heshan was busy doing that, Charity laid back in the comfortable, wicker chair and closed her eyes. Relaxed. She may as well have been sitting on the beach late in the evening after the sun had set and all the vacationers had retreated back into their respective hotels and cabins. This was nice.

“Not going to sleep on me, are you?”

A smile grew on her face at the sound of his voice. “I could go to sleep out here, actually. It’s so…tranquil.”

Heshan grinned, sat next to her with a tray on his lap, containing a hefty slice of chocolate cake, sprinkled with coconut shavings. Also, he brought two small cups of milk, two silver forks and a few napkins.

“That looks delicious.”

“Then I’ll let you have the first bite.” He pressed the fork in the moist cake, then brought the piece to her mouth, watching her chew. He waited until she was done, before asking, “How was it?”

“It’s delicious.”

“Good, then I’ll feed you more. Let me know when you’ve had enough.”

Charity ate more pieces of cake, chased it with milk then said, “Okay. Your turn.” Charity picked up the other fork then fed him a piece of cake.

“Tell me about your family, Charity,” he said after drinking some milk.

“My family?”

He smiled. “Yes. Your family.”

Charity stared at his slender lips as she went towards his mouth with another piece of cake. “You never asked me anything about my family before.”

“That’s because I’m asking now.”

“Okay. What do you want to know?”

“Are your parents still together?”

“Yes. They split up for a few years, and in that time, my mother started seeing someone else, got pregnant with Eden, then she and my father eventually got back together.”

“The man I saw your mother was with at Dilvan’s wedding is your father?”

“Yes. You couldn’t tell? He’s the reason I have this bright-colored hair and freckles.” Charity fed him more cake.

“So you and Eden have different fathers?”

“Yes.” She smirked. “Weren’t you listening to anything I just said?”

“I was…just wanted to make sure you were saying what I thought you were saying. And, if you have different fathers, why is Eden’s last name Eason?”

“Well, it’s not Eason anymore. It’s Alexander.”

“You know what I meant,” he said. “Why is her maiden name, Eason?”

“Because her father was a deadbeat…wasn’t there when she was born. My mom just gave Eden her last name instead which was her married last name…my father’s last name. Clear as mud, right?”

“I’m with you so far.”

“My father is more of a father to her than her father ever was, which was okay.”

“Are you close with your father?”

“Umm…not as close as I could be. My father is always working. He leaves home for weeks at a time.
